Jaw-dropping giant freshwater fish: Alligator Gar.
Hi! Welcome to this humble blog. You may want to subscribe to TN's RSS feed for updates. Thanks! :D
Remember the earlier dinosaurs in science class? The ones with fins and long snouts filled with rows of razor teeth? The alligator gar is a modern rendition of them. It can reach up to 10 feet to 3 meters long and weigh as much as 300 pounds or 140 kilograms.
Despite the fish’s ferocious looks, it’s the alligator gar that is endangered by human activities. It isĀ extensively fished for sport and food too.

That’s probably a young gator gar. Here’s the granddaddy…

Gator Gars are most commonly found in south eastern states in the US, usually in rivers and rarely in salt water. That being said, it’s one ugly fish
December 10th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
is that a fish or a gator??

The very first time I’ve seen an alligator gar was at Underwater World. I think they’re beautiful. Their scales are really shiny and golden silvery. Too bad they’re going endangered.
December 11th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Awesome. But it’s kinda disheartening to hear they’re already endangered, and we’re the culprit, again. Oh well…

I talked to a couple of fisherman friends who told me they pulled a 210 lb. alligator gar out of the Trinity River in Dallas, TX. They kept it for about 3 minutes (enough time to run to the car to discover there was no camera), then released it. If you’ve ever seen that tiny river, you would understand how amazing it is. I have heard of all sorts of gar stories in Dallas.
Cool picture of the grandaddy gar, by the way.
