Miss Philippines-Earth Karla Paula Henry was crowned Miss Earth 2008 on November 9, 2008. Karla is the first Filipino (she’s a Filipino-Canadian mix) to win the Miss Earth Title and it’s also the first time that a host country’s bet took the crown.

Who is she? Unlike her predecessor Jessica Trisko who maintains a MySpace account, Karla doesn’t appear to be a member of popular social networks such as MySpace, FaceBook, or Friendster. There is a brief biography of her professional life at WikiPedia.

Many observers state that it was how she answered the final question that clinched the title, “If you have a chance to speak to newly elected US President, Barack Obama, about the state of Global environment, what will you tell him?.” Karla responded that she would encourage Obama to implement environmental knowledge in the curriculum of schools, “to teach the youth that this is something that we should instill in them so that in the near future they will be the ones to take care of our mother Earth.”

Miss Tanzania was 1st runner-up (Miss Earth Air); Miss Mexico, 2nd runner-up (Miss Earth Water); and Miss Brazil, 3rd runner-up (Miss Earth Fire). Miss Earth 2008 will have a year of promoting projects and addressing issues concerning the environment.
