Bamboo clothing and fabrics.
Hi! Welcome to this humble blog. You may want to subscribe to TN's RSS feed for updates. Thanks! :D
Bamboo was used in scale armor a few centuries back. Modern technology has made a giant step forward with bamboo fabric that can be made into clothing and other articles
. Bamboo fabric is noted for the following properties:
- Bamboo fibers are porous so they wick away moisture very quickly, making the fabric breathable and comfortable. The same property also traps air, making the fabric warmer in cooler temperatures.
- Bamboo has “bamboo kun, ” a unique anti-bacteriAL and anti-fungal agent that can stand many washings and acts as a natural deodorant. Heard of silver impregnated sports fabric that are expensive and maybe hazardous to minute aquatic life? Bamboo fabric is the better alternative.
- Bamboo fiber is naturaly anti-static so it cozies next to the skin without clinging.
- Bamboo fiber is round and smooth, not scratchy, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin.
Currently, the production of fibers from bamboo is not entirely eco-friendly though. We suspect there’s some chemicals used to separate the fiber from the pulp. Mechanical methods will probably macerate the fibers as well.
However, manufacturers are researching ways to make the process absolutely eco-friendly and organic. Probaly testing some natural enzymes to do the separating.
There’s a catch 22 here. If we don’t support bamboo fabric due to the use of chemicals, manufacturers won’t have the money to improve the system. In the end, we miss out on the oppurtunity to utilize a highly sustainble resource to cover one of our basic needs.

I am not sure if it has something to do with the private university in our area, but there has been a lot of discussion about the use of bamboo.
Great article, thanks.

I have one bamboo shirt and it’s my favorite. It looks good, feels good and wears very well. I’m going to be looking for more bamboo clothing.

Well, I have learned something new today! I had no idea bamboo clothing existed, I had only heard about the scale armor. Now I have to look for one, so I will know how it feels to the touch (and compare it to hemp clothing)…
